Framework for selecting and using technology (Bates and Pool (2003));
-
Assessing Technology Using the SECTIONS Model. (Underhill, 2010);
How would I use what I learned
Assignments that are based on the SECTIONS framework will provide me with great practical overview for selecting technologies in my work settings. I am using one of the courses from the program I am affiliated with to analyze and propose changes. Because most of the courses have similar structure the work that will be done in these assignments can be applied to other (most of the) courses in the program.
Parts of the SECTIONS framework can also be used in day to day life for analyzing technologies in your home and making more informed decisions on purchases.
Selecting and Using Technology
Use of appropriate technologies in the instructional materials is very important. There are many technologies available out there for use and their list is constantly growing with technological evolution. This create a need of regularly analyze them in order to improve learners experience. This unit of the MDDE610 course introduces us to Bates and Poole’s (2003) framework model for selecting and using technology – SECTIONS:
-
Students
-
Ease of Use
-
Costs
-
Teaching & Learning
-
Interactivity
-
Organizational Issues
-
Novelty
-
Speed
Although Bates & Poole (2003) provide good theoretical model for analyzing technology, it is hard to implement it in Practice. Underhill (2010) has reworked the SECTIONS analysis to provide better analysis of different technologies and help to assess the fit between goals, selected technology and support requirements. The four-part Framework is:
-
Part 1: Define
-
Part 2: Assess
-
Part 3: Implement
-
Part 4: Refine
Three out of seven grading components of the course are using SECTIONS framework. Assignment 1 requires you to describe a course that will benefit from using technology based and description of the course should be made to fit SECTIONS framework. Assignment 2 requires comparing each of the technology covered in the course in relation to the proposed course to be modified. Assignment 3 will use the matrix created in Assignment 2 to submit proposal on the changes/additions to the technology tools in the course.
E-learning technology compass shows alligning goals, competencies, performance assessments and technology. It also shows examples of technologies available currently on the market as of winter 2014.
Group Assignment - Using Technology in Education
Each group was asked to select one technology that particularly interests them. The group was required to test or use the technology and then prepare a short presentation for the rest of the class. Our group consists of 3 people who chose Wix.com (or simply Wix) for our project. Our presentation has been delivered through the website that was built using Wix.
